A man was arrested for operating while intoxicated after crashing into a parked sport utility vehicle and then a house in LaPorte County.

LaPorte County Sheriff's DeputyAlexander Nolan saw a car driving on J Street near 5th Street with only one working headlight at 12:26 a.m. Saturday.

"While Deputy Nolan was traveling behind the vehicle, it began changing lanes without signaling and proceeded to move back into the westbound lane of State Road 2," LaPorte County Sheriff's Office spokesman Derek Allen said. "A traffic stop was initiated in the 2200 west block of SR 2. As Deputy Nolan approached the vehicle, its brake lights illuminated, and the vehicle began to rapidly accelerate away traveling west on SR 2."

He started to chase the vehicle, which fled east on 18th Street, south on Indiana 39, and east onto County Road 400 South. The driver eventually lost control and crashed into an SUV and then a house.

"At the intersection of U.S. 35 and CR 400 South, the fleeing vehicle failed to negotiate the T-intersection and traveled east across all lanes of US 35," Allen said. "The vehicle continued traveling east onto private property located in the 3900 south block of U.S. 35. The fleeing vehicle collided with a parked sport utility vehicle and the front of a residence before coming to rest."

The driver was identified as Alex B. Dekock, who had difficulty following commands, fell to the ground and refused medical treatment at the scene, police said. He was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement, operating while intoxicated and reckless driving.

A woman in the house suffered an injury after the vehicle crashed into it. Both the SUV and house suffered major damage.

Dekock was taken to Northwest Health Hospital LaPorte and then the LaPorte County Jail, where he was released on bail.
